Raw Color simplified the ingredient of 'medieval wood' to its smallest fibre. This element, originating from one plank, is transformed into a pile of paper. By combining the classical medium of handmade paper with the technology of today, the digitalized year rings grown by the hand of the machine. Treating the wood like an archaeologist we studied the dark oak wood. We weighted, measured it and photographed every step in the process. We choose plank number 3 to saw into sawdust, this was the ingredient for the paper.
In the end we decided to use the technique from this time-being, a computer controlled milling-machine, to draw the rings of the wooden pole. One pole (number 6) we let cut into slices, here came 44 slices out. These 44 different slices weer digitalised and brought back on the paper, drawn by the machine. This visual research is presented during the Dutch Design Week 2010 in Eindhoven at Dutch Invertuals.
Dutch Invertuals presented ‘Matter of Time’, focused on the basis material of 600-year-old wood; archeological oak wood which once served as the foundation for the Eindhoven city entrance. Wendy Plomp, the initiator and curator, got in contact with the archeological institute of the municipality of Eindhoven. Discussing the urge to show the historical material but not having the capacity the institute offered Dutch Invertuals the chance to work with the unique material to convert it into contemporary pieces.

Influenced by light coming through from behind when viewing slides on a light box, Peter Bynum realized how painting has been restricted to light only coming at the canvas from the front. Bynum now uses glass as his canvas, following stints with Mylar and Plexiglass, often in multiples where more light can be trapped between layers. The viewer can even use a remote control dimmer to change the level of lighting in some of these illuminated paintings.

Out in Jukkasjärvi, Sweden, hospitality comes chilled. Surrounded by the Torne River, a brisk arctic climate, and the Northern Lights, Sweden’s ICEHOTEL rebuilds itself every winter like a frosty version of Burning Man to deliver “sensuous, inspiring and unique experiences within art, nature, accommodation and gastronomy” until the architecture melts away. More than just a hotel, ICEHOTEL is an “ephemeral art project,” and this season they have summoned French artist and designerAntoine Weygand and architect Roland Toupet to design “Diamond Genesis,” a name fitting for a celebrity’s child or a hip-hop EP but bestowed upon ICEHOTEL room 339.

Imagine for a moment that you have been alive for 100 years. In your lifetime would have been two World Wars, the sinking of the Titanic, the end of horses on city streets, the invention of the computer and the first man to walk on the moon. It’s a fantastically long time to experience and photographer Karsten Thormaehlen is getting well aquatinted with those who know, taking portraits of centenarians. Her beautiful images capture both the far reaching wisdom of years and joy these elders of our world possess.

For nearly a decade since the late 1970s artist Takanori Aiba worked as a maze illustrator for Japanese fashion magazine POPYE. The following decade he worked as an architect and finally in 2003 decided to merge the two crafts—the design of physical space and the drawing of labyrinths—into these incredibly detailed tiny worlds. Using craft paper, plastic, plaster, acrylic resin, paint and other materials Aiba constructs sprawling miniature communities that wrap around bonsai trees, lighthouses, and amongst the cliffs of nearly vertical islands. I would love to visit every single one of these places, if only I was 6 feet shorter.

The Kenno chairs (design by Heikki Ruoho) are made of new kind of recycled cardboard. The sturdy yet lightweight material can be re-recycled as paper; water-based adhesives are used to create its sandwich construction. The material has an appealing feel of warmth and lightness, and it is durable and versatile. Until today, it has seldom been used for final products like furniture. Kenno chairs are manufactured by using computer-aided cutter, with little manual work required in the process. Four pieces of cardboard form a robust structure with no need for glue or screws. Kenno series consist of three products: two chairs and a stool The Kenno small (S) chair is perfect for children as it can be personalized by painting or drawing on the surface and then discarded when the child has outgrown it.
Kasaa Cardboard Shelf (design by Teemu Järvi) is made of a sturdy but lightweight cardboard material. Numerous variable combinations can be created with two different sized units that pile up to form a modular shelving system. Each unit folds up with two flat-packed cardboard sheets without the need for glue or additional fittings. The adhesives used in creating the sandwich construction are water-based, so material can be recycled as paper.

Martin Azua

Natural Finish is a reflection on natural decoration by Martin Azua. It is a series of very porous white ceramic vases which where left in natural spaces in the middle of nowhere for a year during which time they where colonized by mosses and other organic growths creating micro landscapes bringing to light the power that nature has to appropriate the artificial and leave its mark.

The Organic Factory is not linked to any series of organic food in your local supermarket. Think ahead. Think eco-friendly design. Think of the talented French product designer Gilles Belley.

In 2001 Gilles Belley graduated from the École nationale supérieure de création industrielle ENSCI in Paris. Last year he won the Bourse Agora award, which enables young design professionals active in France to realise a personal, uncommissioned project. Since then his work ranges from his current collaboration with Metalarte and furniture designs to museographic projects and graphic art work. Throughout his overall work one fact is undisputable; simplicity, style, minimalism and respect to nature and its resources are the common denominators of his work.

The Organic Factory offers domestic objects whose design is intrinsically linked to the use of agro materials, meaning materials that are made from agricultural waste and are biodegradable under the action of water. Due to their “sustainable” label, agro materials are usually confined to replace petroleum-based plastics. That is exactly what Gilles Belley does in these objects.

Taking a closer look at Gilles Belley’s research and sketches, it is clear that he has been influenced by natural forms. The Organic Factory plays with continuities and similarities between artificial and natural to propose a set of objects whose shapes and functions are manufactured from nature.

Colline and Plaine [meaning hill and plain respectively] are organic fertilisers both made of agro-materials [sunflower] and tinted glass. Colline is named after the erosion phenomenon. Partially buried in its pot this small form erodes under the action of water. Its base, finer, contains seed mixed with the agro aterial. After several days of watering, the decomposition of the base releases the seeds and organic nutrients. In Plaine, once the seeds are planted, it is located on the pot above the earth. When watering, water slides over the plain, loading organic compounds, and flows to its edges where it can seep to moisten the lower strata. By eroding its surface, water will dig furrows in the Plain to finally make it disappear, leaving room for plants fed by the organic compounds.

Apart from organic fertilizers Gilles Belleysuggests home fragrances and bath aromas based again on agro materials.

Made of aromatic soluble agro materials and stone, Brindille [meaning twig], is an elegant and different way for a continuous subtle home perfume. A small branch that dissolves releasing aromatic molecules, the twig lands on its plate, in contact with water. Alternatively, if you prefer a more rapid and intense perfume, there is Rameau [meaning branch]. The “rameau” used as a whip in the water is gradually dissolved. Heated by the fragrance, water evaporates disseminating aromas. The Rameau is made of aromatic and soluble agromaterials, marble, tinted glass and candle. Fruit is inspired by cypress. Once wetted, it emits essences with antiseptic properties that neutralize unpleasant odors. Once again it is made of aromatic and soluble agromaterial.

Finally, for those of you who like indulging themselves with bath aromas Gilles Belley has designed Inflorescence. As an object it combines geometry, as it looks like a muscari flower. The buttons stand out to be immersed in water bath where, by dissolving, they release perfumed oils with aromatic characteristics of the flower buds of clove that contain antibacterial, antiseptic and analgesic oils.

Belley The Organic Factory is a successful example of environmentally sustainable design products that add elegance to our everyday lives.
